Subaru . How to Seal a Transmission PanTransmission pan gaskets seal the transmission pan, preventing the transmission fluid from leaking through the seam between it and the main body of the transmission. Whenever you change the transmission filter, you must install a gasket when reattaching the transmission pan. Several different types of gaskets exist, most of which you cannot reuse. Some vehicles use only a liquid adhesive sealant between the pan and the transmission, but it can prove difficult to install correctly outside of the factory and allows for replacement with another type of gasket. The installation procedures for different gasket types are largely similar. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Rubber or latex gloves Shop towel Gasket Torque wrench Transmission fluid Step by Step : 1 Remove the old gasket material from the edges of the transmission pan and the gasket seal surface on the transmission body. Don't use anything sharp enough to scratch the metal; gloved fingers will suffice. Wipe the gasket sealing surfaces clean with a lint-free shop towel. 2 Look along the top of the transmission pan to see whether it has become bent or warped. You can straighten stamped metal transmission pans if they're not too badly warped, but you must replace a bent cast-aluminum pan. 3 Position the gasket on the transmission pan. If the gasket has bolt holes smaller than the holes on the pan, you can install the bolts through the pan and the gasket before you reinstall the pan on the transmission, and the smaller holes will prevent them from falling out. 4 Place the transmission pan in position on the transmission, and hand-tighten the bolts. Begin with a bolt in the center of one side of the pan, move on to the bolt directly opposite, and continue hand-tightening the bolts in a crisscross pattern. 5 Tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications with a torque wrench, working in the same order as before. 6 Park the vehicle on a level surface if you have yet to do so. Fill the transmission system with transmission fluid. Start the engine and shift through the gears, then back to park. Check for leaks. 7 Check the transmission dipstick. Add more fluid if necessary. Tips & Warnings Some older gaskets require a bead of gasket-fastening cement to seal properly. Most modern gaskets have the sealer built in. Overtightening the bolts may damage the gasket or the transmission pan itself, causing leaks. Torque only to specifications.
Subaru . Leak in a WindshieldThe sealant fastening the windshield to the car frame will degrade over time, and if untreated, it will leak moisture into the car, causing unpleasant wetness, odors and even noises. Fortunately, there are several methods to prevent and treat windshield leakage. Prevention Accumulated debris can hasten windshield sealant degradation. Routinely clean dirt and grime out the sealant with a toothpick. Inspection While using a toothpick to clean out the sealant, check for leaks by inserting the toothpick between the glass and sealant. If it fits a quarter inch or deeper inside, the affected area will probably leak. Cheap Sealing Use a caulking gun on the affected areas to repair degraded sealant. Apply duct tape to the caulked areas, and keep it there for a couple days to solidify the caulk. Repairs If leaking persists after home repair methods have been utilized, consult a professional. If the problem is with cracks in the glass, you may have to replace the windshield altogether. Plymouth Prowler. * Check whether the inside edges of the doors, hood, and trunk are neatly painted, or whether the old paint shows through. A 0O Part V: Helping Your Car Look Its Best Look for unpainted spaces around the edges of door handles, chrome, and other fittings. These parts should be removed, rather than masked, so that the paint extends under them and protects the area from rust. If inadequate masking has allowed the paint to overspray these and other unpainted surfaces, refuse to pay until the unwanted paint has been completely removed. Compare newly painted parts to other areas to be sure that the color matches the older paint exactly. Because bodywork requires such expertise, buying a new bumper or piece of trim (or locating an unflawed one at a wrecker's) is often less expensive than restoring the damaged part. Many modern vehicles have thin, relatively inexpensive body panels that are designed to be replaced rather than repaired. They crumple so easily that they're as difficult to straighten as tinfoil, and it's cheaper and easier to have a new panel installed and painted.
